I was finishing high school and entering college during the years that the pivotal struggles for civil rights were occurring.
I recently read Taylor Branch's "Pillar of Fire". The book is encyclopedic in scope as the author depicts that struggle. For me, 'Pillar of Fire' shifted my understanding of the struggle for civil rights. The politicians, including LBJ, were driven to pass the legislation due to the heroic efforts of the many people who put life and limb on the line in pursuing rights that today we take for granted. I learned that the Civil Rights Act was accomplished through the bravery and sacrifice of many unsung dedicated citizens.
