There was that type, and there was the Huret Multito:

Slightly more refined, it used a tiny belt and pulley. Reflecting the analog 
nature of the machine, the only way to fine-tune its accuracy was to wrap a 
piece of sandpaper around a nail and slightly reduce the diameter of the pulley 
on the device itself. This had to be done to use with 700C wheels, since the 
Multito came out of the box set up to more or less accurately record mileage 
with 27-inch wheels.
