Thanks for the replies. After reading, I looked online at replacement rotors and see that you can get them for under $10, so that is a way out. The video was very helpful in that it reduces to clear, discrete steps the rather blundering and intuitive approach I was trying. I'll use a crescent wrench for now.
I don't think my calipers are bad, since, again, it is only this one disk that offends: the other three are fine.
