I remember when boutique wheels came on the scene. There was a bunch of guys in my bike club who always rode together. First one, then the next, eventually one by one, they all switched to high-zoot boutique wheels. It was an arms race, with the goal of being the fastest in the pack. When it was all over, everyone was in exactly the same position in the pack that they'd been in before, but collectively they'd spent enough on wheels to buy a new car. But they all felt FAST.
