I've used various brands of sealant in tubes (you can get it into presta valve even if the valve does not have a "removable" core: just force the locknut off, let the core fall into the tube, fill, locate the core by feel and work it back up to and into the stem -- it's no big deal) both on and off road, precisely for this purpose, only to have, inevitably, a larger puncture make a huge, slimy mess of goo inside the tire casing -- and of course you are left with a useless tube; at least I've never been able to clean the punctured area well enough to get any patch to adhere. Overall, using a tire like the Big Apples with its pretty effective, but not ride-harming belt, is less work.
Regarding the original question: gave up after one traumatic incident after having applied 12 patches with many more still needed. Once counted well over 30 patches on a (skinny road -- 559!!) tube that I was about to install. (This tube had probably been in recirculating use for five years or so.)
