I like the idea of the longer bolt and nylock nut. I'd need a large washer for the top - the bolt is special, with a wide head (and sloppy socket interface). The ideal setup would be bolt, washer, shifter, washer-with-a-tab, boss, nylock nut.
The washer-with-a-tab would stand the shifter off the stay a little, and the tab would nest in the valley between the stay and the boss. Ideally, it would be nylon, to protect the paint. If I have too much trouble, I'll go spend the requisite hour at the hardware store. I thought about making a fimo or sculpey anti-rotation spacer.
