Hi Gernot, I did not have a basket on that bike and there was no visible wear on the plastic coating of my housing. However, I'm sure wear like yours certainly doesn't help. Perhaps you could try putting a little bit of heat shrink tubing (can be found in the electrical dept. of hardware stores) on your replacement cable housing to protect them at that wear point. I also think you're on the right track with that washer on your shifters. Way to kick that problem in the pants!
