Same thing just happened to me, Bruce. helmet split 3 " up the left side. I was dazed, but able to barely function. Too bad I didn't have a helmet for my right collar bone, which snapped completely in two. Even worse, the collision with that guard rail was ENTIRELY my fault.

It's impossible to say for sure how bad an injury "could have been." They only way to prove it to yourself is to have a close call in which your helmet gets destroyed but you walk away fine. This happened to me and turned me from an occasional helmet wearer into a dedicated helmet wearer.
