Fear is one thing. Reasonable caution and preparedness is another. Munich/ Zurich/ etc. is not Los Angeles my friends. People here hit cycles, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. I have encountered both first hand and I don't even commute. Basic gear like a helmet is just common sense. It works for motorcycles (which I do commute on). If cycling gains more support with the public and the infrastructure- certain basic "safety" /prevention will just be common sense. FYI- check out these chic alternatives.
