They do charge by distance, but it's very size dependent.  On small
items, it usually costs the same.  Just ran some zip codes on the USPS
web site to make sure, and kept getting the same result for a small
package via 1st class or priority whether I was mailing it to Seattle
or to Fairbanks, Alaska.  This is not the case with larger items.  You
want a ship a wheel to Alaska, get an exact quote.
