Actually, Jim, that Flickr post was also in the back of my mind, as I recall reading the comment stream wherein a poster asked if you were going to scrap the bars and you replied that you would. The only difference is that my bars did not get bent, and I was no longer aboard when the bike skidded on its right side into the guard rail, therefore my weight wasn't driving the bike-guardrail impact.
I hadn't considered the stem at all. Now you got me thinking abut that as well. You're right about messin' up my smile. Aluminum cracks can progress quickly and let go suddenly. You need to feel like you can trust your part. For me, it isn't worth the mental tweaking if you aren't sure. I've had bikes clatter off the pavement, which disperses energy, but if it really augered into something, you are probably looking at replacement. FWIW - this is what my noodles looked like after getting doored a back in 2009. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/3675517009/ The right side was bent back and the right side was bent in - I think the bike landed hard on the left side of the bar after the initial impact. I did not reuse them. The right brake lever was crushed and unusable, but the left one still works.
