+1 on the ankle strap. I used to wear a Rivendell one on my left ankle when commuting, its long tab sticking out further left. Many drivers complimented me on my very visible ankle strap, occasionally going so far as to ask where they could get one. I never got a comment on my tail lights, but that ankle strap got their attention.
