My local shop just gave me a couple of feet of that plastic tubing--lifetime supply!
I don't always use it--cables are pretty smooth and I've run them bare through the cast in guides and it's been fine. Even if it wears through the paint eventually, the continuous contact/motion of the cable prevents rust.
