My opinion is that it really isn't a big deal to run the cables bare under the BB. I recently stripped down my Atlantis for sale. I had been running bare cables for several years. As I inspected the frame before shipping, I noted that the paint was barely worn under the BB, let alone any metal. The BB shell is a thick, sturdy, piece of metal. It is unlikely to suffer any significant damage from the smooth, thin, stainless gear cables. My new Hilsen is also unprotected and I'm fine with that.
