FWIW, if you let your min spir sit quietly in a jar for half an hour,
all of the ugly sludge settles to the bottom and then you can (if your
hands are steady) pour the cleanish stuff off into another jar,
leaving said sludge behind (and worry about how you can get the ugly
sludge out of the first jar).

What *I* do is use a large coffee can (from cheap coffee I wouldn't
condescend to *drink*) for swishing large, dirty parts about in, and
then decant the leftover essence into a mayo jar for safekeeping once
the sludge has settled. Then I can wipe out the ugly sludge with a rag
or paper towel thus incurring just as much work but very slightly less
expense and time than filtering the stuff through a coffee filter
(anyway, I use a press for my coffee). (Actually, what *I* do is wax
my chains, but the immediately forgoing is what I'd do if I bothered
to clean my chains first, and what in fact I used to do before I
became wax enlightened.)
