You're on target about upgrading wheels. I have two bikes with Phil Wood freewheel hubs. Other than a polish now and then I haven't touched them in twelve years! Freewheel hubs are less expensive than the cassette hubs and there still seems to be a good availability of freewheels. Unless the Phils will break you I would bite the bullet and get them. You'll never have to even think about hubs again.
