Friends, Is asking for tour route advice off topic? If so, I respectfully retract....
I do a week long tour every summer. Past years have included: -Minneapolis to Duluth (first "tour" ever. Simple, yet informative on what touring is and can be) -Oakland-SF-Marin-Sonoma-Napa loop. (credit card, lots of climbing and suffering and WALKING, but still fun somehow) -Madison, Wi to LaCrosse loop. (partly solo and all self-supported, some of the most beautiful riding I've experienced) This year, I'm strapping down the Bomba with my Old Man Mountain racks (excellent construction, materials, functionality, great folks!) and all my gear and touring Seattle to Portland over 3-4 days, the balance of time being spent exploring Portland. I can't wait! For once, maybe I'll have adequate fitness as well! My question is about the route. We haven't decided details yet. Can anyone point to me to good resources for planning a bike tour route from Seattle to Portland? Should we go toward the ocean? Toward the mountains? What would a climb of Mt. St. Helens be like? I don't want to reinvent the wheel here...I could just base it on the STP route, but I'm looking to get creative, get off the beaten path, great campsites, light traffic, downhill the whole way, tailwinds the whole time, you know the deal.
