I've built a half dozen or so wheels just using Sheldon Brown's wheelbuilding page. As long as you're working with a fairly traditional wheel (no oddball spoke styles or lacing patterns), the main thing is to get the pattern right and to approach the final stage gradually and evenly. I find wheelbuilding to be a relaxing way to spend an evening, and it generally makes me wish i had the excuse to do it more often.
