My research turned up these suggestions to help chain on and 'ensmoothen' 
your shifting, esp. if you'll be going over bumpy terrain:

   - Use a narrow-wide chain ring; the teeth profile grabs at the chain 
   better than a traditional ring's teeth.  (Or, use a chain guide ... but you 
   might not like the looks of it...and it kinda negates the clean look of not 
   having a FD anyway.)
   - Use a clutch rear derailleur to help keep tension on the chain at all 
   times.
