Kinda reminds me of the story about George Gershwin who supposedly asked for lessons from the likes of French composer Maurice Ravel, who (somewhat afraid that learning to compose in that classical style would ruin Gershwin's natural innovative talent in the more modern, progressive style) was said to have remarked, "Why should you be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?"
