Yes, that's a mountain bike. Can't tell if it's a Stumpjumper or Fisher or Ritchey. From the date of the photo, it's near the end of the "classic" era of mountain bikes.
And while I'm not positive, pretty sure it's the same Mark Sisson of Primal Blueprint. The smile looks identical. (Don't know Mark, so can't be sure.) Am more taken by a couple of other things - first off, how big of gearing everyone had. Except for that mountain bike no visible triples and what looks to be at most 26 tooth cogs in the rear. And the bikes and sizing. Tom Ritchey looks to have the "smallest" sized bike. That has a fistful of post. And also note the general lack of Brooks saddles. There are other things, but better leave it at that.
