I am currently running a pair of R539 brakes on my '83 Trek, and at least 
in the front, they are the limiting factor in fender/tire clearance. Dia 
Compe 610's offer several millimeters of additional clearance over the 
539's. I think if you want maximize clearance with that kind of brake 
reach, you need to go to centerpulls (or have canti posts brazed on).

I have had a front fender accordion on me before, so I like conservative 
clearance with fenders. Others may be more comfortable pushing the limits.
