Take time and smell the roses (and enjoy some local “off course” coffee and 
food). 

My wife and I did the ride a few years back and the urge to “keep going” made 
us look askew at the big crowds at the rest stops. By the time We were up on 
the Gowanus Parkway she was really tired and thirsty. I pushed her seatpost 
with one hand to the park at the foot of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the 
vendors awaiting us.

The only other thing she grew tired of was the endless complimenting my orange 
Rambouillet drew. “Why do so many people think that bike fits you so well?” she 
asked.

I saw ten or so Rivendells. Figured it was about right.
