I remember when 0-60 in six seconds was marketing buzz for Corvettes. About 5 years ago, one of the Camry 6-cyl models (this is America's favorite family sedan) could do the same. I rented a Camry circa 2014, undoubtedly a large 4-cyl because fleet, and it accelerated so fast that at first I thought that the speed was calibrated in KPH.
My 1984 Passat wagon had a claimed 88 bhp; my 1996 Saturn SL2 about 120; 1990 Voyageur 140; my current PTC 150 (all figures claimed for cars when new). I came close to getting myself in trouble with all of those. I have to say though that after driving several fleet full-sizes with large 4s over Raton Pass to CO Springs, it is really amazing what they've done with engines. Cruise at 90 with load, climb the Pass at 70-75 with engine in 5th at 5-6K rpm, and still get 30+ mpg.
