All based on my own personal quirks - please no one think I am dissing your gear shifting:
I find reaching the down tubes more natural than at the bar end. Also, when friction shifting you often need to adjust the front der when shifting the rear, lest the chain rub against the der cage. With a little practice on dts you can perform this one hand at the same time. Finally, I neither like the look of cables extending from the bottom of the bar or, for that matter out from under bar tape. I have non- aero super record levers (with original and still supple gum handles - natch) for the Spectrum. In my opinion it is a tidier look.
