Robert: We lived on the crest of the hill on the old Limuru Road about 1/4 mile south of the turnoff to Rosslyn Academy; Kilileshwa (which may not have existed in the '70s) is a good 15 km south of the Rosslyn area, which itself is 5-6 km north of the Muthaiga Mini Market, near the junction of the old Limuru Road and the turnoff to Muthaiga. I am very tickled to see that the M Mini Market is still there; I think it had just recently been built when we arrived in August 1968 -- I used to go in and buy Crown Bird cigarettes and Tusker beer age 14 or so. It was what in the US would be a convenience store, but in Nairobi it was an upscale expat mini grocery/convenience store.
When were you there? Back in the late 60s until we left in 74 it was all forest and coffee with scattered houses on large estates from -- memory dim here -- an Asian high school to Muthaiga, and certainly from Muthaiga to Rosslyn. I heard from someone who visited in the '90s that now this section of the Limuru road was all office buildings and housing estates. I am very, very glad we saw it when we did; "white highlands," basically, Karen Blixen country, tho' she was ~40 km SW around the Ngong Hills; I recall senior year riding with a couple of friends up to the top of one of those hills; nothing but blue sky and silence, and infinite bush below.
