Cody: You might just try your Deershead and see how it works. I've used old
Dura Ace fds with rings as small as 38 and hand no problem shifting to and
from rings 14 t smaller (38-24; currently 42-28).

The DA fds do sit  just a mm or so above the chainstay when on the inner
ring, but they don't touch it.

I also shifted a 38X24 just fine with a 10 speed era LX fd: converted from
46/36/24 triple to 38/24 and just left the fd in the same position,
adjusting throw screw.

Patrick Moore: 42X28/14-27 10 speed with SunTour barcons pulling 74nn front
