Oh my!  These pictures are worth making posters!  

It appears like he is riding uphill on  a muddy rugged narrow track with 
53t chainring.  Animal! (I say that with respect)

Guess almost none of the details we sweat about really mattered to him.  He 
was more into riding than bikes.  

I recall Garth reminding me about 'riding' when I was lost thinking all 
kinds of tiny details about the 'bike' :)

I have had conversations with folks who have done multi-month rides.  One 
of them rode from Prudhoe Bay (which involves 400 miles of godforsaken 
Dalton/trucking/gravel highway) to Key West.  I tend to ask them what wheel 
size, which tires,  tire width, what brakes, bags, power source and so 
forth.  They were quite under equipped, going by my list.  Also 
interestingly none of them had strong opinions about any of those details.
