Hi This question is for the *alta cockers*
Asking for a good friend who has an early '80's Trek 720 touring bike. We have a mini tour planned later in the month. Riv content is, I'll be on my S.H. or Protovelo. He needs a new wheelset. The specs are 126mm rear triangle. 700c. He's definitely on a budget and looking to keep the costs relatively low...but would like to have a strong wheelset capable of putting on the miles. I don't know enough about old hubs to advise him. Seems like his options are: 1. Buy a used wheelset off of eBay or a list that we could just plug and play 2. Buy some NOS or lightly used front and rear hubs off of eBay or a list and have a new set of wheels built that may be a little more robust and modern than something we find used 3. Buy a new Velo Orange PBP 100/126 wheelset at around $400 4. Get the rear triangle re-spaced to 130mm and all of a sudden, a lot more hubs/wheels are open to us at potentially a better cost. Also, we have a couple of questions related to the above... 1. Is there a practical difference in usage between a 126mm freewheel hub and a 126mm cassette hubs beyond just the type of cluster used? in other words, is there any reason to think that a frame designed for a 6 speed freewheel would have any issue with a 6 speed cassette? 2. Similarly, am I correct in thinking that a 7 speed freewheel/cassette would also fit on a hub originally designed for a 6 speed freewheel/cassette?
