Regarding sealant messes: The other day I got some sort of puncture in my
front Elk Pass that 3-4 fl oz of Orange Seal would not seal after 2
stop-'n'-pumps-'n'-spins. So I stopped a 3d time and swapped out the tube
for 1 of the 2 pre-sealant-added spares I carry.

When I removed the old tube, the tire had a small lake of Orange Seal at
the bottom. Yes, a bloody mess. But I carry a cheap bandana in each of my
kitbags for just such occasions: use it to clean up the inside of the tire
after decanting the superflous sealant into the grass. The bandana easily
has enough absorptive capacity to produce a pretty dry and clean tire
casing.

If it weren't for goatheads, I'd not bother with sealant for road use;
lightweight tubes and proficiency with a patch kit would, all told, be the
easier choice. But for off road -- 60+ mm tires, 200+ gram tubes, low
pressures -- I rather think I'd stick with tubeless and sealant.

Speaking of sealant spray: I've had larger holes in tubeless tires spray
sealant as I ride, flecking the frame and my legs. The little "rubber
band"-type plug systems work well in such cases, since the reduce the size
of the hole to one which sealant can seal. (Indeed, sometimes, at least on
dirt, if you just keep riding a bit longer, the spitting sealant collects
enough dirt at the hole to plug it, and all you have to do afterward is to
trim the ugly bolus with the little knife I am sure that you all carry with
you on all rides.
