Back in the Pre-Cambrian epoch, that's the 1970s if my memory serves me, I did most of my riding on a fixed gear. The chainring was either a 45 or a 46 and I had 16, 17 and 18 tooth cogs. I mostly used the 17. But the change from one to the other was significant. Nice thing is that single speed cogs aren't that expensive, so I'd suggest you buy a 17 tooth cog and see how well it works for you. If it's not low enough it's no big deal financially. Just buy an 18 tooth cog and you'll be set.
