"Pinging" from a wheel typically denotes spokes unwinding. This usually only happens during the first rides of a wheel that was built with spokes that did not have their windup resolved, and the result is typically a slight wobble/hop. Therefore, it is highly unlikely to come from a wheel that has seen 3 years of service, and that still spins true.
A possibility is that the wheel may had seen enough service (although 3 years?) that the spokes may have notches at their crossings, worn from the minute deformation of the wheel when in use. When one squeezes the spoke pairs, the spokes move out from these notches. One can feel this step, and this action can make a sound; this sound is rather distinctive from that of the spokes unwinding though. The spoke tension only needs to be high enough so that it doesn't go to zero during expected use. Otherwise, the nipple can unwind at zero spoke tension, leading to a progressively untrue wheel. If the wheel is still true after 3 years of service, I would just keep on riding. This is especially true of a front wheel with none of that crazy N-speed cassette hub dishing with its associated low tension left side spokes.
