why not match the big ring to the small cog for what will be your highest 
gear inches, e.g if comfortable with 104 gi, and a 11T cog, 700x32s gives a 
large ring of 42T (102gi).  Spa Cycles in UK sells XD2 cranks with TA rings 
in sizes from 40 to 52 in 110mm BCD.   A 42/34/24 would give maximum gi 
range.  A 42/36/24 gives maximum gi range and almost half step gearing due 
to limiting the big ring to 42.

Just trying to skin "the too many redundant gears' cat another way
