I agree, the best short ride near downtown is the granite and boardwalk 
trails on Ladybird Lake. Mostly stay on the south side of the lake, the 
path has several breaks in it on the north side. It gets less crowded as 
you ride east toward Roy G Guerrero Park.

There are several other places to rent nicer bikes than b-cycle, e.g.
