What you need besides the quill adapter with a distinct lip(unlike the VO
adapter with a curve) , a 1-1/8" OD , 22.2mm ID sleeve. I got about 4
inches of this from a bike shop years ago. Then you can add your shiny
alloy spacers over that, under the threadless stem.

This will still look kinda odd though as all of this is on top of the
threaded stem . Myself I use the VO/Genetic adapter and it looks as good
as it's going to get with a conversion. Finding a threadless stem alone
that looks streamlined itself a challenge.

But sheesh, if it's so ugly to you as you say, don't bother getting what
you don't want. Is it any less "unappealing" than paying $80 for the VO
quill stem you mention ?

If right now you needed to spend $80 on something essential that you or a
loved one cannot do without, would you waffle about it at all because of a
"personal opinion/objection" ? Or if the frame you're buying was $80 more,
would you not buy it ? Or whatever parts/wheels you choose ?

Yeah ... much ado about nothing !
