I think in an old RReader Lon Haldeman said he used to train by using only one cog per week or something and then move the chain to the next hardest cog for a week and back-and-forth like that between a few cogs, IIRC.
At Some point I think a person will need to start training to get any faster. That’s one of the reasons why I stopped ratrying to do brevets. I’m very slow and I ride for fun.
