Lum, in essence you are taling boiled wool socks with sandals, which you can
see in winter action here. Depending on what winter means to you, you’ll be
fine, or you’ll wish for more wind blocking (I get 30-50 mph winds in winter,
and even a little getting through is cold at various temps.). I decided I have
no desire to risk toes to not wearing shoes, and found the Xero dress shoes to
be big enough (at +2 sizes) to go over my boiled wool socks. Combined with my
gators, I am wind proof and highly breathable and fairly protected against wet
soakthrough, with boiled wool for insulation.

As for heartiness, boiled wool is excellent, but I’ve worn through boiled wool
shoes in less than a year, and learned to go with boiled wool socks combined
with shoes or sandals to get the effect I want, but can wash, repair, or
replace the socks as needed.
