Yeah, it's nuts. But there are certain things that become annointed by some
subculture and then the price discovery mechanism takes on a whole new
wrinkle.

Case in point: These NOS Weinmann levers
<http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-WEINMANN-bicycle-brake-levers-made-in-Germany-/162673813719?hash=item25e01d68d7:g:crYAAOSw9sJZup6T>

sold for less than $20, while these NOS Campy Records
<http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-NOS-NEW-Campagnolo-Super-Record-brakes-brake-levers-lever-set-/391777482018?hash=item5b37c1f522%3Ag%3AWqkAAOSwtGlZD0X4&nma=true&si=xGKF6Rn42zLgHnFDnm1N2qArc44%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557>went

for $249. Both drillium. Both shiny aluminium. Do we think the Campys
really stop 10x better? Even in used, abused condition, the Campys will
sell for 5x the price. In fact I just bought a gorgeous bicycle in pristine
condition that, once I sell the brakes and seatpost that came on it and
replace them with ones from my parts box that have almost the same look and
function identically, it's entirely possible the bike will have paid for
itself.
