I ran a 1x9 for a couple of years on my Surly Ogre with a Deore 9 speed rd and a Paul Chainkeeper. I used to loose the chain on bumpy stuff and the chainkeeper was perfect. In retrospect, I probably could have made the chain tighter but I liked to mess with chainrings sizes and left some slack.
