Yes, along the lines of what Joe said, it's stated as a "heads up" to quell 
complaining. 

I've noticed that there is no universal standard for crank arm spacing. If you 
measure the thickness of every spider, you will get different results for every 
crank. Then you have the rings, not all shaped the same, you may assume that 
all rings are flat, and all rings are not. Sugino OEM PE rings for example are 
slightly offset at the spider. Then you hqve different width of chains from 
brand to brand and model number.  So when you factor in the infinite variables, 
there is no precise number standard for spacing, which is no real standard at 
all, and for us that's a good thing since we can mix and match stuff. Bike 
parts are not high precision instruments, thankfully !
