I imagine another factor here is that we are looking at a certain subset of Rivendell owner, one who belongs to this RBW group. Kind of a concentrated, tiny niche within a tiny, microscopic niche. Being a rabid Rivendell fan and hooked in to the ongoing creation process through social media and the internet, it is only natural to be enticed by new, exciting models. And awesome colors. And great descriptions. And a great company. And dreams of adventure. I spend a fair amount of time convincing myself that I don't need a Mountain mixte with Lift-a-tube or a Cheviut in silver or a Legolas in a nice shade of pink. And ultimately my bank account and life situation don't support "brand new bike" purchases, otherwise I might be buying (and perhaps selling) more Rivendells. I do have one full Riv, one Riv fork attached to a very Riv-like frame, and a bunch of old vintage machines with builds inspired in large part by Rivs. If I needed to sell a bicycle for financial reasons, at this point the Riv would be the one on the block, since I could not get much for the rest of the bunch. So that could be another factor. (I recently sold a bike for financial reasons, and I chose the one I could get the most money for--my Clementine was second in line. I was also dealing with a new to me health issue, which may have affected my reasoning. If I had to do it over, I would probably keep the bike. Live and learn, I guess. But my goal these days is to learn to admire from afar, even with "super" craigslist deals, and just ride;^)
P.S. Joe, creaky bones or not, I suspect you are going to love your Clem L. Though of course without the curved seat stays and over over oversized seat tube, it won't be quite as collectable as mine in 15 years.
