Okay, I think the right move for me would be to zip-tie the pump to my tool/jacket/glove bag :)
It's been a thousand or so miles since I started biking regularly. All kinds of surfaces, different types of tire, but not single flat so far. If this luck were to continue, the zip-tie would never need to be cut! Small downside of this luck is that I don't think the pump until I've been riding for half hour.
