Dstein: I think arm length and style of riding matter much in this equation. 
I'm a little guy with short arms and everything I ride has the bars level or 
higher than the saddle; the last time I rode drops they we're almost comically 
jacked up, but it felt great. But - as you addressed - I'm not a particularly 
aggressive rider, even if I'm out there for a few hours. So the upright 
position is best for me, although I wouldn't use pullback bars for singletrack, 
that's for common  flatbars or the original Bullmoose.
