As you can tell from the responses, the answer to your question is "most definitely" some of us use non-drop bars for 75km+ rides. I've done it myself many times with albatross bars, including several multi-day tours. As others have said, it takes some experimentation to dial-in the fit. My personal key to success was using ergon grips, and finding the right balance in the fore/aft position of the bar so that the bar ends and forward curves are equally comfortable. I put cloth tape on the front curves and use that position often. You might prefer a different bar, but I am optimistic that you could find something to counter the problem you described from having more hand pressure with less pedal force (which was exactly my problem).
