I wonder why they switched from cantilevers? Mine had the most wonderful IRDs, best brakes I've ever used (this with Noodles and Tektros) and I generally dislike cantis with drop bar levers.
Anyway, they solve the reach problem and maximize clearance for the frame. If that Sam had had a shorter tt and took 2" tires, I'd probably not now own a Matthews.
