When I first got my Sam frameset, I used various bits and pieces I had laying around to build it up and ride it before I knew exactly what I wanted. This included running an Ultegra 6600 10-speed drivetrain & brifters on it which I had laying around unused. While it wasn't a typical Sam build, everything integrated just fine. I slowly swapped out most of the Ultegra parts but ran the hollowtech Ultegra crankset on it for almost a year, despite going to a 9-speed 12-36 cassette, Deore RD, and bar-end shifters. (I also used the brifters only as brake levers for a bit).
