I know about the Spring Thing.  I haven't tied one, but I'm 200% convinced it 
will rattle, and I would rather have silent fenders in the wrong position than 
noisy fenders with perfect lines. As much as I like showing off photos of 
parked bikes, I do actually ride them a little. 

The more likely solution that I might pursue is making my own dropout plugs to 
push the wheel all the way forward while still allowing reliable and repeatable 
wheel installation. That way the fender gap doesn't need to be huge. 

If one of you kind and helpful recommenders of the Spring Thing is sure it 
won't rattle, please let me know and I will try one.  Please be sure though, 
because I will likely have to drill out the M5 threads on my kickstand plate to 
install this thing.
