Knickers, er, Breeches, uh, Breeks, are an old garment type and, as Patrick of the Moore points out, they are supposed to extend below the knee when unchinced so that when cinched above the calf there is room to move. My traditional birding moleskin breeks I am using this winter come down to mid-calm uncinched and fit perfectly when cinched, allowing full range of motion, including fully kneel and squat.
With abandon, Patrick, who is sticking with cotton or wool from now on because it is SO much quieter than nylon.
