Bill, firstly I saw your mention about Jitensha Studio on the IBob list.
Totally spot on! I've visited numerous times over the past 15 years...and
it's never been open!

But also, my mention about the stays & general beach cruiser design is not
meant to conflate the "unracer" and the "
stern bike-face" people.

Instead I think such builds such as this:

...including the long stays and naming of bikes such as "Mike Jones III
Jr." or whatever is that the brand is moving away from bikes that I fell in
love with.

To put it another way, these bikes are not my "rod", baby!

*"When Grant Petersen was 19, he ordered a custom bamboo fly rod made by
Doug Merrick of the Winston Rod Company <http://web.winstonrods.com/>. “I
wanted red winding on the guides — ‘Like a Leonard
<http://www.hlleonard.com/> rod,’ I said — and a cork grip shaped like a
Payne <http://www.efpaynerodcompany.com/> rod. They were two other fancy
rods,” explains Peterson. Merrick refused. “I won’t do it,” he told
Petersen. “It wouldn’t be my rod, then.” *
