Prefer cotton for hot weather. The fact that it gets wet helps me stay cool. Long sleeve cotton dress shirt is wonderful in the heat. Wool is great for colder day rides. Synthetics are great for multi day as they pack much smaller for similar warmth. Smell is an issue over time though with most of the synthetic under layers.
